US Sen. Brown releases military service record (AP)

BOSTON ? U.S. Sen. Scott Brown released his military service record Saturday documenting the more than three decades he has served in the Army National Guard.

The records include his promotions, awards and officer evaluation reports, which offer high praise of Brown's service during the Massachusetts Republican's years in the military.

An officer evaluation report from 1985 was typical, describing Brown as "a young and aggressive officer."

"He is self-motivated and learns very fast. He has the potential to be promoted to a position with greater responsibilities," the report said.

Brown, a member of the Armed Services Committee, is facing a tough re-election campaign.

His office said the documents show the reason he was passed up for a Guard promotion to lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General Corps in 2003 and 2004 was due to a missing document in his file.

Brown's office described the failure to include the document ? which showed that he had completed the necessary Command and General Staff Office Course ? as an administrative oversight. They noted that after Brown appealed to show that he had completed the required military education, he received the promotion in 2006.

The same oversight caused the Army National Guard to place Brown into the Retired Reserve from July 2005 through December 2005, his office said.

Brown first enlisted in the Massachusetts Army National Guard in 1979.

"I am proud of my 32 years of service in the Army National Guard," he said in a statement accompanying the documents. "The Guard has profoundly impacted my life, and I credit those I have served with for inspiring me to be a better man, and a better servant of my country."

The documents did not include Brown's military medical records, which he said he plans to release when the military provides a copy.

Brown's office said he has never requested a transfer during his military service and that every transfer he received was ordered by the Massachusetts National Guard Adjutant General.

The awards Brown received include a Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, an Army Achievement Medal and Army Parachutist Badge.

Brown, who also serves on the Senate Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs committees, has said his service in the military has helped inform his work as an elected official.

He pointed to a recent proposal he sponsored that he said was designed to protect housing benefits for National Guard members deployed overseas.

Brown recently hosted a field hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee of Veterans Affairs to address what he said was the unprecedented claims backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the difficulty that returning veterans face as they try to enter to the workforce.

Last August, Brown participated in a weeklong training session in Afghanistan, spending most of his time in Kabul, where he lived, ate and trained with other troops, according to his office. It was his first time serving in a combat zone.

He was a key vote to end the so-called "don't ask, don't tell" policy that had prevented gay soldiers from serving openly in the military.

Brown won a special election in 2010 to fill the seat held for nearly half a century by Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy until his death from brain cancer.

His chief Democratic rival this year is Harvard professor and consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren. Polls show the two locked in a tight race.

The two recently signed an agreement designed to discourage outside, third-party groups from running attack ads in the race, which could end up being the most expensive campaign in Massachusetts history.

Clippers hold off Grizzlies for bounce-back win (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Blake Griffin scored 20 points, Chris Paul added 18 points and seven assists in his second game back from injury, and the first-place Los Angeles Clippers hung on in the fourth quarter for a 98-91 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night.

Mo Williams scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Griffin added nine rebounds and eight assists as the Clippers maintained a narrow lead throughout the final period. Caron Butler scored 17 points, and Paul also had seven rebounds while playing back-to-back games after missing the previous five with a strained left hamstring.

Rudy Gay scored 24 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost two straight following a seven-game winning streak. Marc Gasol added 18 points and 11 rebounds on Memphis' third stop on a four-game West Coast trip.

Gasol's two free throws trimmed the Clippers' lead to 91-89, but Butler hit a driving layup, and Paul made two free throws after a steal with 45 seconds left. Although Griffin didn't score in the fourth quarter, the Clippers scored seven consecutive points in the final minute to seal their third straight win over Memphis.

DeAndre Jordan had nine points and nine rebounds as the Clippers bounced back from Wednesday's contentious loss to the Lakers, dropping that rivalry game after holding the lead for nearly every possession of the first 3 1/2 quarters. The Clippers' new nucleus is still learning how to respond to adversity, and this gritty win over a strong playoff contender should help.

The Clippers stayed in first place in the Pacific Division even during Paul's absence and after their first loss of the season to the Lakers, but a tougher schedule looms for a franchise with just one winning season in 19 years. No team in the Western Conference has played fewer games than the Clippers' 16 ? including 11 in front of sellout home crowds.

The Grizzlies had a day off after their loss in Portland on Tuesday in their fourth game in five days. Gay managed just 11 points against the Trail Blazers, but surpassed that well before halftime against the Clippers.

Paul made a four-point play during an early 11-0 run by the Clippers, who jumped out to a 27-11 lead late in the first quarter. Rudy Gay made a 50-foot shot at the first-quarter buzzer as the Grizzlies made a 14-0 run of their own, keeping it close into the fourth quarter.

NOTES: Both teams wore throwback ABA uniforms. The Clippers dressed in the baby-blue-and-red gear of the Los Angeles Stars, while the Grizzlies sported the Memphis Tams' gold jerseys and green shorts. Starting in 1972, Charlie Finley dressed his newly purchased basketball team in the same colors worn by his Oakland Athletics and the NHL's California Golden Seals. ... Before the game, the Clippers assigned G Eric Bledsoe to the D-League's Bakersfield Jam in his comeback from a torn meniscus in his right knee. The second-year point guard was hurt during an offseason workout. ... Fans near courtside included Rihanna, Billy Crystal, "True Blood" actor Jim Parrack and David Justice.

Julie Delpy, Chris Rock talk "2 Days in New York" (Reuters)

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuters) ? Back in 2007, actress Julie Delpy brought to theaters a comical love story, "2 Days in Paris," that she also wrote and directed, starring Adam Goldberg as her on screen boyfriend in a romance set in the City of Light.

The movie earned positive reviews, and roughly five years later, she has returned with "2 Days in New York," only this time her character Marion has replaced Goldberg with a new beau, played by comedian Chris Rock. The two are living together in the Big Apple when her family, including a father who hardly showers and an oversexed sister, come to visit.

The amusing farce premiered on Wednesday at the Sundance Film Festival to a warm reception. And Delpy, who directed, co-wrote and stars in the film, sat down with Rock to talk about it, writing the role specifically for Rock and how it was better that he really didn't understand French when they were filming.

Q. Chris, why did you want to work with Julie? You can do any films you like?

Rock: "Really? Tom Cruise can do whatever he likes."

Delpy: "Not anymore."

Rock: "Maybe Shia LaBeouf can? I just liked the script and that is all I need. I don't get into, you know how people are like, 'I see myself as a brand and does this help my brand' and all that nonsense. If I am in a good movie, it will be good for me. I thought the story was really good. I thought the script was great and I trusted Julie and that was enough for me. I don't think I asked her another question. I had seen her other films. I loved her other films. You know, character stuff, not 'movie' stuff.,"

Q. Julie how did you end up casting Chris?

Delpy: "When I decided to make a sequel to the film I wanted him to be my new boyfriend. And I called his agent, who I happened to know, because I have been fired from every agency in town. Actually ICM fired me when I was writing "Sunset" ("Before Sunset"), because they thought I was crazy to write a sequel. They thought I was wasting my time and I was crazy. They said, 'why are your wasting your time?' But, it's OK I am not even mad with the guy that fired me, I am actually friends with him. Anyway, so I called his agent, who wasn't the guy that fired me, I knew him way before that, and basically and I said, 'I want to write a film for Chris and me, the sequel to '2 days in Paris.''... an hour later he called me back and said, 'Go For It.'"

Q. Chris, how was it working with Julie's real-life father? (French actor Albert Delpy) Any strange odors, as joked about in the film.

Rock: "No no he smelled like baby powder, he was great."

Delpy: "He didn't know what was going on between me and my father. It played favorably to have Chris not really understanding what was going on in French. It was better to keep it like that. If the film sometimes seems mayhem, like the dinner scene, it is really built that way."

"I have always been fascinated by language and being a foreigner in America and having traveled many places. I think with human beings, there is a lot of misunderstanding already, especially in relationships but it gets even more when there is language issues."

Q. Julie, you have worked with your father before, how are you similar and different?

Delpy: "My dad is more crazy than me, I am much more square than he is and more organized and much less crazy than he is."

Q. You often get compared in style to Woody Allen and you say you admire him with other directors. What do you still learn from Allen today?

Delpy: "I want to have his career. If I have his career I will be very very happy and very very lucky."

"I also love Robert Altman, I love how he created interaction between characters and this feeling that everything is totally natural and normal."

Rock: "I was going to be in his last movie, and then he died. I don't know why he did that to me."

Q. Julie the comedy was sort of old school farce, playing on cultural differences, but also felt modern. Were you aiming for that tone or style?

Delpy: "I don't really think about what I am going for in terms of the comedy, I am only thinking about what makes me laugh and what pleases me when I am writing ... I like when the cameras moves a lot and it is very lively because I like this feel of urgency and mayhem."

Q. Are you more out of place in France or America?

Delpy: "I am still treated as a French person, but sometimes people are resentful that I love it in the US,. It's a French thing you know, but most of the time I am included in being this French person that has moved. ... It is unclear to them what I am doing and what I am aiming for. They are a bit surprised and they kind of hate that because they love to put people in boxes. But I think that is here, too."

The camera enables the researchers to see an aspect of light that humans are essentially blind to: polarized light. Though humans aren't sensitive to polarized light, many reef dwelling animals are but this has not always been taken into account in previous studies of reef communities.

Thanks to generous support provided by a Yulgilbar Foundation Fellowship, Dr Shelby Temple, and a team of researchers from the Ecology of Vision Laboratory in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, will take their camera to the Lizard Island Research Station to study how the coral reef environment looks to animals that can see polarized light.

Dr Temple said: "Many reef dwelling animals, like octopus, crabs, shrimp and maybe even some fish, are sensitive to polarized light. It's hard for us to understand what that means because we really can't see the polarization of light without some kind of aid, like polarized glasses or specialized polarization converting cameras like this one."

The camera enables the researchers to measure the polarization of light. It then converts these polarization images into false colour images, where different colours are used to represent different polarizations of light.

"It's a bit like using an infrared camera that turns the infrared light we can't see into colours that we can," said Dr Temple.

Preliminary results from Dr Temple's research suggest that the polarization dimension of the visual world under water is much more complex than previously thought.

He said: "There's evidence that all types of communication and camouflage are going on, which we've essentially been blind to until now. Imagine how different our understanding of coral reefs would be if we only saw in black and white.

"Lizard Island is an ideal setting for our research because we can test an animal and when we return it to its home we can then measure the polarization signals in the very environment where we found it."

(AP) ? Keiton Page tried to explain to his Oklahoma State teammates the sensation of fans rushing the Gallagher-Iba Arena court to celebrate a big upset.

With freshman swingman Le'Bryan Nash flashing the brilliance that made him a McDonald's All-American, they got to experience it for themselves.

Nash scored a career-high 27 points, Brian Williams added a career-best 22 and Oklahoma State knocked off No. 2 Missouri 79-72 on Wednesday night, handing the Tigers their second loss of the season.

"Le'Bryan played at a very high speed tonight, a very high gear. All of his moves were a little bit more explosive," Cowboys coach Travis Ford said.

Nash scored 13 points during a 17-4 burst that sent the Cowboys (10-10, 3-4 Big 12) into the lead in the final 4 minutes and the Tigers didn't have a response.

Nash hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to get it going, then nailed another 3 from the left side to give the Cowboys a 65-64 lead with 3:23 to play. He connected on another 29 seconds later and ran to the opposite end of the court when Missouri (18-2, 5-2) called timeout to encourage a student section that was already hopping up and down to bring it on.

When the clock hit zero, the students rushed the court and huddled around Oklahoma State's players at midcourt.

Earlier in the week, Page fielded questions from his younger teammates about his experiences from an upset of top-ranked Kansas two seasons ago, hoping for a similar result.

"A lot of them just wanted to know what it was like for the students to run on the floor," Page said. "My answer's a lot different for them. I'm 5-9. They can see, they can breathe when it happens."

Ricardo Ratliffe had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Missouri, which allowed the Cowboys to shoot a season-best 59 percent. They hadn't surpassed 49 percent against an NCAA opponent all season.

"I thought that our focus was not where it needed to be in order to win a game like this on the road," Tigers coach Frank Haith said.

Missouri got steals on three straight possessions to fuel a 10-2 run in the first 5 minutes of the second half, taking a 48-41 lead when Ratliffe waited out two defenders leaping prematurely to block his shot at the left block before scoring the basket.

Ratliffe's three-point play off a spinning bucket at the right block gave the Tigers their largest lead at 53-45 with 14:22 to play, but it didn't last.

"I expected it to be a hard-fought game," Haith said. "This is Big 12 basketball. There's good players.

"We didn't do what we needed to do to finish the game out once we got control of the game."

Nash had a bucket off a baseline inbounds pass and another off a post-up move against Kim English to get Oklahoma State within striking distance.

Markel Brown added another energizing play with a right-handed dunk off an alley-oop but got called for his second technical foul for getting in Matt Pressey's face and was ejected. Marcus Denmon hit the two free throws from the technical and Ratliffe added two more off a third-chance opportunity to push the lead back to 60-53, but the Cowboys didn't miss a beat.

After Nash's big spurt, Williams had a two-handed dunk in transition and a three-point play to help preserve the lead down the stretch.

Nash had scored 21 points four times this season but was coming off a rough performance when he had only four points and got himself into foul trouble.

"I was trying to get aggressive in the second half," Nash said. "I talked to my coaches and they were like, 'Don't try to let the ball come to you. Go get the ball.'

"Basically, that's what my teammates did. My teammates got me the ball in good situations and once it started rolling, the shots started falling."

Ford credited a renewed commitment from Nash, who stuck around for extra shots following shootaround instead of joining his teammates to eat.

"When he's shooting like that, give him the ball every single time. He was making big plays on the offensive end and the defensive end," Page said. "If (Nash) keeps playing like that and we keep playing as a team, we could be a dangerous team in the Big 12."

Denmon finished with 17 points but on 4-for-16 shooting. Phil Pressey, the Big 12's assists leader, matched his season low with two.

It continued a rough stretch for Top 25 Missouri teams in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Tigers have lost six straight games while ranked in Stillwater, dating back to 1992, and may not be visiting again anytime soon with next season's move to the Southeastern Conference.

Four of those six losses have come at the hands of unranked Oklahoma State teams.

Brown provided a boost right from the start with a thunderous right-handed jam on Oklahoma State's first possession after winning the tip. He picked up a technical foul 90 seconds into the game that seemed inconsequential at the time but eventually led to his dismissal.

OSU made an uncharacteristic 57 percent of its shots while leading most of the first half. Page's step-back jumper from the left elbow provided the Cowboys a 37-36 lead at the break.

The first half marked the third-best shooting performance in a half this season for Oklahoma State, the Big 12's worst shooting team at 41 percent, only to be outdone by a 62 percent mark after halftime.

"It's a huge win for us. It's a big win," Page said. "It just shows us what we're capable of. It shows us we can play with anybody. We still have a long ways to go. ... This team's hungry. This team's hungry for wins."

U.S. commandos free two pirate hostages in Somalia (Reuters)

MOGADISHU (Reuters) ? U.S. special forces swooped into Somalia on Wednesday and rescued an American and a Dane after a shootout with pirates holding them hostage, in a rare raid into the Horn of Africa nation to free foreign captives.

The aid workers, American Jessica Buchanan and Dane Poul Hagen Thisted, were kidnapped from the town of Galkayo in the semi-autonomous Galmudug region in October while working for the Danish De-mining Group (DDG).

"This is yet another message to the world that the United States of America will stand strongly against any threats to our people," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement.

Military helicopters ferried elite troops to the pirate camp in scrubland close to Haradheere, a major pirate base in central Somalia, Washington's Germany-based Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a statement.

"All nine captors were killed during the assault," it said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta confirmed no American soldiers were killed in the operation.

The Danish Refugee Council said Buchanan and Thisted were now at a safe location. Media reports said they had been flown to neighboring Djibouti, home to the only U.S. military base in Africa and France's largest base on the continent.

Somali pirate gangs typically seize ships in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden and hold the crews until they receive a ransom. The kidnapping of the aid workers in Galkayo was an unusual case of a pirate gang being behind a seizure on land.

U.S. and French forces have intervened to rescue pirate hostages at sea, but attacks on pirate bases are very rare.

The U.S. raid was unlikely to deter pirates who rake in tens of millions of dollars each year in ransoms.

Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal earlier said the poor health of one hostage had led Washington to take action and said the rescue operation did not necessarily pave the way for further copycat missions.

People involved with the hostages had said earlier this month Buchanan was suffering from a possible kidney infection.

"About 12 U.S. helicopters are now at Galkayo. We thank the United States. Pirates have spoilt the whole region's peace and ethics. They are mafia," Mohamed Ahmed Alim, leader of the Galmudug region, told Reuters.

He was speaking from Hobyo, a pirate base north of Haradheere, where he said he was negotiating the release of an American journalist seized on Saturday, also from Galkayo.

"GOOD JOB TONIGHT"

Pirates and local elders say the American journalist and a number of sailors from India, South Korea, the Philippines and Denmark are being held by pirate gangs.

A British tourist kidnapped from Kenya on September 11, 2011 is also still held captive in Somalia.

America's NBC News, citing U.S. officials, said two teams of U.S. Navy SEALs (special forces) landed by helicopter and rescued the hostages after a gun battle with the kidnappers.

The freed hostages were then taken by helicopter to an undisclosed location.

Obama was overheard congratulating Panetta, apparently for the success of the operation, as Obama entered the House of Representatives chamber on Tuesday for his annual State of the Union speech.

"Leon. Good job tonight. Good job tonight," Obama said.

Panetta visited U.S. troops in Djibouti last month on his way to Afghanistan and Iraq, in a stopover that reflected Obama's growing focus on the militant and piracy threats from Yemen and the eastern edge of Africa.

In Djibouti, the United States has a platform to monitor al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Yemen and Somalia's al Shabaab, a hardline rebel group with links to al Qaeda.

Somalia's government applauded the mission and said it welcomed any operation against pirates.

U.S. special forces killed senior al Qaeda militant Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in a raid in southern Somalia in 2009. Several other al Qaeda or al Shabaab officials have been killed in U.S. drone strikes in Somalia over the past few years.

It was also U.S. Navy SEALs who killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a raid on his Pakistan home in May.

Ex-CIA agent charged in Gitmo secrets case

Former CIA interrogator John Kiriakou describes waterboarding in an interview with Chris Matthews on "Hardballl."

By Michael IsikoffNBC News

A former U.S. Senate investigator who had previously worked for the CIA was arrested Monday and?charged with repeatedly leaking classified information to journalists as well as violating the federal law that forbids disclosing the identity of covert intelligence officers.

John Kiriakou, who between 2009 and last year worked as an investigator for Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was charged by a federal grand jury with one count of violating the Intelligence Agencies Protection Act, two counts of violating the Espionage Act and one count of lying to the CIA about his actions in an effort to convince the agency to let him publish a book, "The Reluctant Spy: My Secret Life in the CIA's War on Terror."

Kiriakou turned himself into the FBI Monday morning.?In an initial court appearance in Alexandria, Va., Monday afternoon, Kiriakou waived a preliminary hearing and was released on a $250,000 bond after surrendering his passport and agreeing to stay in the Washington area and not to contact any witnesses in the case. His lawyer, Plato Cacheris, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The charges cap a three-year investigation by Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. attorney in Chicago,? into?how photographs of covert CIA officers involved in the interrogation of terror suspects ended up in the Guantanamo prison cell of one of the accused 9/11 terrorists. The discovery of the photographs stunned top CIA officials. Fitzgerald was then appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to oversee the probe because of his prior expertise in the intelligence protection act as special counsel in charge of the Bush era investigation into the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

DOCUMENT: Read the complaint against Kiriakou

The investigation initially focused on the role of defense lawyers, who used a private investigator to obtain surveillance photos of CIA officers. But the probe found no wrongdoing by the defense lawyers or the investigator.?Instead, a Justice Department complaint charged, it found that Kiriakou provided information to three journalists, emailing one of them the name of a covert officer who then supplied the name of the officer to a defense investigator. (The journalist is not identified in the complaint). The complaint also alleges that Kiriakou provided another reporter at the New York Times with classified information about another CIA officer's role in the capture of accused Gitmo terrorist Abu Zubaydah. The information was included in a front page June 22, 2008, article in the Times entitled, "Inside the Interrogation of a 9/11 Mastermind" that raised questions about the use of waterboarding.

Msnbc's Alex Witt talks with author John Kiriakou about his book "The Reluctant Spy."

In an interview with FBI agents last week, Kiriakou denied disclosing information about the CIA officer to the New York Times reporter, Scott Shane, answering, "Heavens no," when asked if he had done so, according to the criminal complaint. But the complaint charges that Kirikou provided the reporter with the CIA officer's phone number and personal address.

The charges are the latest in a series of criminal leak cases brought by the Justice Department under President Barack Obama. But the cases have so far proven difficult for federal prosecutors; one major one, involving former NSA employee Thomas Drake, accused of leaking classified information to a Baltimore Sun reporter, resulted in a resounding defeat for the Justice Department last year when federal prosecutors withdrew all criminal charges against him.

Kiriakou spent 14 years with the CIA, between 1990 and 2004. He was hired by Kerry in 2009 to help investigate national security related issues for the Foreign Relations Committee. This came after Kiriakou gained prominence by giving a 2007 interview to ABC News about the use of waterboarding and how it allegedly broke Zubaydah in 35 seconds -- a claim that has been much disputed. (It was later disclosed that Zubaydah had been waterboarded 83 times.)? Kiriakou, who for a time worked as an ABC News consultant and appeared on several NBC News and MSNBC TV programs, later said that he did not personally participate in the waterboarding and had only read about it in intelligence reports.

A judge last year refused to find the CIA in contempt of court when it destroyed dozens of videotapes of?the interrogation of Zubaydah and other detainees.

Dec. 11: Former CIA agent John Kiriakou talks with TODAY's Matt Lauer about the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes.

In December 2007, the CIA acknowledged doing so as part of?the detention program begun after the Sept. 11 attacks.
A spokeswoman for Kerry, Jodi Seth, emailed this statement Monday to NBC News: ?John Kiriakou was an investigator with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from mid-2009 to 2011 when he left the committee voluntarily.? These charges date back to actions allegedly taken when he was employed by the intelligence community and both pre-date and are unrelated to his work for the committee. Understandably, our office has no information beyond what is publicly available, and only today did we become aware of this situation.?

In a statement issued after the charges were filed, CIA Director David Petraeus issued a statement to agency employees reminding them of the need to protect classified information.

"In return for the secrecy we need to do our work, the American people and our elected representatives expect us to uphold our nation?s laws and values," Petraeus said in the email. "When we joined this organization, we swore to safeguard classified information; those oaths stay with us for life. Unauthorized disclosures of any sort -- including information concerning the identities of other Agency officers -- betray the public trust, our country and our colleagues. Given the sensitive nature of many of our agency?s operations and the risks we ask our employees to take, the illegal passage of secrets is an abuse of trust that may put lives in jeopardy."

Jersey Shore High Five: Vinny Leaves?!

Plus: Pauly gets burned ... and robbed.
By Jim Cantiello

Vinny on "Jersey Shore" on Thursday

Thursday night's "Jersey Shore" brought back season-one hookups and introduced a new kleptomaniac, while Pauly's "GTL" game is all out of whack thanks to a gnarly tanning-bed sunburn. Plus, Vinny's anxiety disorder caught up with him and the fan favorite moved out of the house for some R&R. Oh no! Click on the embedded video below to catch my five favorite moments from this week's "Jersey Shore."

5. Jionni Gets Wet
After the gang got caught in the rain, Snooki's man Jionni needed some dry threads.

What a guy the Situation is! Gives Jionni the clothes off his back and gives America the need for brain bleach yet again when he brings up the rumor that Snooki's mouth and his "situation" are intimately familiar with each other. Woof.

4. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
At Karma, the girls got a little tipsy. Obvs. And Deena shared an adorable euphemism for getting her sex on.

I wonder what Snooki calls it!

So in other words, sex with Deena is like winning a trip to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory and sex with Snooki is like a flavorless, usually dry overcooked slab of meat. Noted.

3. Face Off
DJ Pauly D said, "Screw SPF" and ended up S-O-L. That sound could only mean one thing: A "Jersey Shore" r-r-r-r-r-remix!!!

2. Sticky-Fingered Hookup
Later, Pauly got down a DTF girl, but as soon as the smooshing ended, Pauly's long national nightmare began ...

To add insult to injury, DTF girl turned out to be Winona Ryder with a touch of that crazy Israeli girl from season one. Because the next day? "Ding dong, here's your chain that I stole. Yay, I'm back on television! Hi, mom, I'm a star!" God help us if she keeps coming back to find her missing shoes. I'm on to you, shady lady.

1. Vinny Leaves?!
Ugh, feelings? Boring! Get drunk, f--- a girl ... I don't watch this show for touchy-feely crap. Boooo!

But seriously, poor Vinny says he's having severe anxiety attacks. I know what will make him feel better. Vinny, smack Snooki in the face with your balls.

Still depressed? Hmm, that usually works. I don't know what's gonna happen!

Vinny actually left?!?

So now who has the biggest penis in the house? This is important, "Jersey Shore"! Don't leave us hangin'! Pun intended?

For continuing "Jersey Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

Electron's negativity cut in half by supercomputer

Friday, January 13, 2012

While physicists at the Large Hadron Collider smash together thousands of protons and other particles to see what matter is made of, they're never going to hurl electrons at each other. No matter how high the energy, the little negative particles won't break apart. But that doesn't mean they are indestructible.

Using several massive supercomputers, a team of physicists has split a simulated electron perfectly in half. The results, which were published in the Jan. 13 issue of Science, are another example of how tabletop experiments on ultra-cold atoms and other condensed-matter materials can provide clues about the behavior of fundamental particles.

In the simulations, Duke University physicist Matthew Hastings and his colleagues, Sergei Isakov of the University of Zurich and Roger Melko of the University of Waterloo in Canada, developed a virtual crystal. Under extremely low temperatures in the computer model, the crystal turned into a quantum fluid, an exotic state of matter where electrons begin to condense.

Many different types of materials, from superconductors to superfluids, can form as electrons condense and are chilled close to absolute zero, about ?459 degrees Fahrenheit. That's approximately the temperature at which particles simply stop moving. It's also the temperature region where individual particles, such as electrons, can overcome their repulsion for each other and cooperate.

The cooperating particles' behavior eventually becomes indistinguishable from the actions of an individual. Hastings says the phenomenon is a lot like what happens with sound. A sound is made of sound waves. Each sound wave seems to be indivisible and to act a lot like a fundamental particle. But a sound wave is actually the collective motion of many atoms, he says.

Under ultra-cold conditions, electrons take on the same type of appearance. Their collective motion is just like the movement of an individual particle. But, unlike sound waves, cooperating electrons and other particles, called collective excitations or quasiparticles, can "do things that you wouldn't think possible," Hastings says.

The quasiparticles formed in this simulation show what happens if a fundamental particle were busted up, so an electron can't be physically smashed into anything smaller, but it can be broken up metaphorically, Hastings says.

He and his colleagues divided one up by placing a virtual particle with the fundamental charge of an electron into their simulated quantum fluid. Under the conditions, the particle fractured into two pieces, each of which took on one-half of the original's negative charge.

As the physicists continued to observe the new sub-particles and change the constraints of the simulated environment, they were also able to measure several universal numbers that characterize the motions of the electron fragments. The results provide scientists with information to look for signatures of electron pieces in other simulations, experiments and theoretical studies.

Successfully simulating an electron split also suggests that physicists don't necessarily have to smash matter open to see what's inside; instead, there could be other ways to coax a particle to reveal itself.

Turkish former army chief appeals against detention (Reuters)

ANKARA (Reuters) ? A lawyer for the former head of Turkey's armed forces, General Ilker Basbug, appealed on Thursday against his detention on charges of trying to overthrow the government, state news agency Anatolian said.

Basbug, military chief of staff from 2008 to 2010, was sent to a high-security prison outside Istanbul last week after a court ordered he be remanded in custody while prosecutors completed their investigation and prepared formal charges.

Basbug is the most senior officer to be caught up in court cases involving alleged plots against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government in what some see as a major step toward democratic reform in the European Union candidate.

Military chiefs were once regarded as the most powerful men in Turkey after decades of coups before Erdogan's government took charge in 2002 and reduced the influence of the generals.

Basbug's lawyer, Ilkay Sezer, told Reuters last week his client should be tried in the Supreme Court if he is charged. He has called the charges "beyond comprehension."

The secularist military has always had a tense relationship with the ruling AK party due to the party's Islamist roots, although the party shuns the Islamist label and describes itself as socially conservative.

President Abdullah Gul, a former AK prime minister and foreign minister, said that Turkey's highest court should try Basbug.

"My personal opinion is that Supreme Court (should hear the case)," Gul told reporters Thursday. "But at the end of the day it's a technical issue."

The case against Basbug, linked to an alleged ultra-nationalist network called "Ergenekon," centers on websites that spread propaganda against Erdogan's government that the military was accused of running until 2008.

Hundreds of people have been jailed in the investigation, including journalists, academics, lawyers and military officers in what is seen by some as a crackdown on secularist critics of the government.

In a report this week, the Council of Europe human rights body criticized Turkey's legal system for inadequate protection of defendants and its years-long pretrial detentions and sweeping antiterrorism laws.

Plaques to Italy Holocaust victims stolen (AP)

ROME ? Italy's Jewish community and a Holocaust survivors group expressed outrage Friday at the removal by vandals of three cobblestone plaques honoring Italian victims.

German artist Gunter Demnig has laid thousands of such plaques around Europe in front of the homes of people later killed in the Holocaust. He calls them "Stolpersteine," or stumbling blocks.

Earlier this week, three such cobblestone plaques honoring the Spizzichino sisters were unveiled in Rome's Jewish ghetto, where in 1943, during the occupation of the city by German troops, many residents were seized and sent to Nazi-run death camps.

By Thursday the plaques were gone, but regular cobblestones remained.

Italy's Union of Jewish Communities has organized a protest for Saturday. Union president Renzo Gattegna said the vandalism was "a shameful attempt to cancel the memory of the pain suffered by victims of the Nazis and Fascists."

Holocaust survivors are "heart-sickened at this wanton act of vandalism, which is an offense against the memory and dignity owed the victims of the Nazis and the Fascists," said a statement from Elan Steinberg, vice-president of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants.

He called the vandalism "not only an assault on the Jewish victims" but said it was "directed against the good name of Italy itself. We will not forget that despite its wartime Fascist leadership, everyday Italians of every stripe were instrumental in rescuing Jews from the clutches of the Nazi killing machine."

Ancelotti: I?m a coach, not a superstar

7 January 2012 18:20

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti has played down his status ahead of his first competitive game in charge of the French outfit.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti has played down his status ahead of his first competitive game in charge of the French outfit.

The Italian, who has previously won the Champions League twice with AC Milan along with a handful of other trophies, will take his team to Locmine on Sunday in the Coupe de France.

Ancelotti spoke of his delight at taking his first management job in France and how he is looking forward to the game this weekend.

"I am very happy to be in France to hopefully lead the team to the championship. I hope to have a good relationship with other coaches in Ligue 1," he told the club's official website.

"I'm not a superstar, just a coach. I like working, I like football and I want to do my best here."

"I'm excited (about the Locmine match). It's an important game for us. We want to have a good run in this competition. It is important to try and win everything. I want my team to play a good game and show great attitude and personality but above all, I want a win."

"I know little about Locmine. I saw a video of one of their games but the image was not very clear although I did manage to get an idea about their style."

Ancelotti confirmed a number of players would miss the match through injury.

"Chantome Clement, Jeremy Menez, Blaise Matuidi and Kevin Gameiro are all unavailable but they should resume training next week," he said.

Ancelotti was appointed PSG coach last week after parting ways with Chelsea in the summer of 2011.

Critics pick 'Melancholia' as best film of 2011 (AP)

NEW YORK ? The National Society of Film Critics selected Lars von Trier's drama "Melancholia" as the best picture of 2011 during its annual meeting Saturday.

The society also named the movie's star, Kirsten Dunst, as 2011's best actress. The film ponders the end of the world.

The group, comprised of 58 prominent movie critics from around the country, met Saturday at Sardi's Restaurant in New York City to make its picks.

Society members chose Brad Pitt as best actor for his performances in "Moneyball" and "The Tree of Life." Albert Brooks, in "Drive," and Jessica Chastain, in "The Tree of Life" and two other movies, received nods for supporting roles.

Terrance Malick was picked as best director, also for "The Tree of Life," and Werner Herzog's "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" was selected as best nonfiction film.

The society, founded in 1966, also works to promote film preservation and historically important movies.

This year, it recognized Brooklyn's BAMcinematek for its retrospective of films by Vincente Minnelli, known for musicals and dramas; and the Criterion Collection for its DVD package of "The Complete Jean Vigo."

The group's picks can help galvanize interest in films ahead of the Academy Awards in February, but are not known to heavily influence who gets picked for the Oscars.

Four executives leaving in Sprint reorganization

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Four executives are leaving Sprint Nextel Corp. in a reorganization that will combine the sales and marketing functions for both its consumer and business units.

Spokesman Scott Sloat confirmed the move, which was laid out in a memo sent by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse on Friday.

The news was reported earlier by Reuters.

Sprint is in the midst of a costly upgrade to put its phones on a "4G" network, and Hesse expressed the need to become more efficient in the memo.

Sprint shares fell 5 cents, or 2.2 percent, to close at $2.19 on Friday.

Lenovo's ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook hands-on

Lenovo ThinkPad T430u
Ultrabooks are all the rage this year's CES, so it only makes sense that Lenovo would want to get in on the action and bring the new, slim form factor to its lauded ThinkPad line. We swung by the company's trailer to get some hands-on with the T430u -- the first such machine that we've seen packing discrete graphics from NVIDIA. At only 21mm thick and under four pounds, the first ThinkPad Ultrabook is certainly svelte and falls on the more portable end of the spectrum for 14-inch PCs. Sadly there weren't any working models on hand, but we were able to get a good idea of what the aluminum chassis (covered in a soft-touch rubberized paint, of course) will look and feel like. The iconic red nub and unparalleled keyboard are in tow, as well as a large click pad. The demo unit was sporting a glossy screen, but when it ships early in the second half of the year it'll be packing an anti-glare panel. We were also impressed with the incredibly clean bottom panel which, while incredibly difficult to photograph, does hide the required pile of stickers and licensed keys that usually pollute the laptop's exterior. Check out the gallery below to see HDMI and SIM card slots that hide around the back and the usual cadre of SD slots, USB 3.0 and Ethernet ports that populate the sides.
