Existing research shows that it is beneficial to have a loved one present when visiting the doctor, but a new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health suggests the opposite may be true for older adults suffering from poor mental health. They examined whether companion presence in routine primary care visits helps or hinders physician visit processes and found that older adults with poor mental health function may experience more communication challenges in the form of shorter visits and less patient-centered communication. The results are featured in the June 2012 issue of Journal of General Internal Medicine.

"Despite a growing body of research that a family companion has favorable implications for patient- centered processes and communication during medical visits, what remains unclear is the effect on medical visits that involve discussion of a potentially stigmatizing condition such as mental health," said Jennifer Wolff, PhD, lead author of the study and an associate professor with the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management. "Our study found that when patients with poor mental health were accompanied by a family companion, patients engaged in less psychosocial information-giving; physicians engaged in less question-asking and partnership-building and both patients and physicians contributed more task-oriented and biomedical dialogue which is indicative of less patient-centered communication."

Using an observational study, researchers examined primary care visits of accompanied and unaccompanied patients ages 65 and older. Medical-visit communications were audio recorded and coded using the Roter Interactional Analysis System. The authors evaluated visit duration, patient-companion verbal activity, and patient-centered communication, and adjusted for differences in accompanied and unaccompanied patients' age, gender, race and physical function. The researchers examined study participants' self reported mental health and determined communication challenges were amplified in the lowest functioning mental health subgroup. In addition, medical visits were 2.3 minutes longer when patients with good mental health were accompanied.

"Patient-centered care remains the ideal patient provider paradigm," said Debra Roter, DrPH, MPH, co-author of the study and a professor with the Bloomberg School's Department of Health, Behavior and Society. "Our findings speak to the need for greater attention to primary care infrastructure to support delivery of mental health care, as well as research to identify best practice strategies for integration of family in routine medical practice. New models of inter-professionalism which acknowledge family in the decision-making environment, explicit recognition of family in national health care quality deliberation and growing evidence that family companions are commonly present and directly involved in medical-visit dialogue make this a topic ripe for further inquiry."

Hubble sees a spiral within a spiral

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured a new image of the spiral galaxy known as ESO 498-G5. One interesting feature of this galaxy is that its spiral arms wind all the way into the center, so that ESO 498-G5's core looks like a bit like a miniature spiral galaxy. This sort of structure is in contrast to the elliptical star-filled centers (or bulges) of many other spiral galaxies, which instead appear as glowing masses.

Astronomers refer to the distinctive spiral-like bulge of galaxies such as ESO 498-G5 as disc-type bulges, or pseudobulges, while bright elliptical centers are called classical bulges. Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, which does not have to contend with the distorting effects of Earth's atmosphere, have helped to reveal that these two different types of galactic centers exist. These observations have also shown that star formation is still going on in disc-type bulges and has ceased in classical bulges. This means that galaxies can be a bit like Russian matryoshka dolls: classical bulges look much like a miniature version of an elliptical galaxy, embedded in the center of a spiral, while disc-type bulges look like a second, smaller spiral galaxy located at the heart of the first -- a spiral within a spiral.

The similarities between types of galaxy bulge and types of galaxy go beyond their appearance. Just like giant elliptical galaxies, the classical bulges consist of great swarms of stars moving about in random orbits. Conversely, the structure and movement of stars within disc-type bulges mirror the spiral arms arrayed in a galaxy's disc. These differences suggest different origins for the two types of bulges: while classical bulges are thought to develop through major events, such as mergers with other galaxies, disc-type bulges evolve gradually, developing their spiral pattern as stars and gas migrate to the galaxy's center.

ESO 498-G5 is located around 100 million light-years away in the constellation of Pyxis (The Compass). This image is made up of exposures in visible and infrared light taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.3 by 1.6 arcminutes.

I have gathered quite a bit of information and facts in my quest to find out about this affliction and to see if the standard question of how lengthy do hemorrhoids last can be answered. While the exact causes aren?t known by the scientific community, one factor they do agree on is that hemorrhoids do not occur overnight, you cannot just wake up 1 day and have hemorrhoids for now reason. Consequently this also indicates that hemorrhoids will not be going away in the event you sleep overnight either, this is going to be a method.

This is a question I asked myself and nobody could give me a definite answer. Why? Really simply hemorrhoids is really a mystery to science, doctors can only give us guesses to why hemorrhoids happen to how a treatment could sooth the pain and irritation of hemorrhoids via trial and error. In effect doctors can not give you a good time of how lengthy do hemorrhoids last.

Trust me, I would gladly welcome any doctor?s assistance on hemorrhoids, they?re the reason why I?ve to pay so a lot for medical insurance. Sadly all that income does not solve a really simple issue that many people today face, which is hemorrhoids. I have gathered quite a bit of data in my quest to learn about this affliction and to see if the basic question of how long do hemorrhoids last could be answered. Even though the exact causes aren?t known by the scientific community, one factor they do agree on is that hemorrhoids don?t take place overnight, you cannot just wake up 1 day and have hemorrhoids for now reason.

Consequently this also indicates that hemorrhoids won?t be going away in case you sleep overnight either, this is going to be a method. Maybe giving a level of severity of the hemorrhoids is crucial here. For level one we?ll just say that this is the developmental stages of hemorrhoids and it can be really irritating. Level two is where we involve such terms as prolapsed, this means that the hemorrhoids have come out of the anal opening, this is what happens with level, and the hemorrhoids come out but recede back inside. Level 3 is progressively worse where the hemorrhoids come out but do not go back in without a push from the finger, it has lost all elasticity. The last level four is genuinely bad this is when a prolapsed hemorrhoid comes out, and cannot go back in even with assistance.

Depending on your level of hemorrhoid from levels one through four will figure out how long do hemorrhoids last? Treatment is feasible, for instance employing the rubber band ligation approach. Basically a rubber band is placed around the hemorrhoid to cease the flow of blood to the area, fundamentally a tourniquet for the answer.

A different treatment would be to use infrared coagulation, with this strategy an infrared laser is pointed at the hemorrhoid and this treatment stops the blood from flowing to the hemorrhoid, feel of it as a high tech tourniquet. The theory is the same to quit all blood flow to the affected location. Now performing a hemorrhoidectomy is on a whole various ballpark, this entails invasive surgeries and removing the affected areas and as with all surgeries recovery time is dependant on the individual. With all these, the question asked is how lengthy do hemorrhoids last and the answer is, it depends on your hemorrhoid level, what you determine to treat the region with and how long it takes for you to individually recover.

Rouge Valley gets $144 million to become Canada?s first national park in a city

(Image: Vlad Litvinov)

As the federal government promised nearly a year ago, a massive stretch of the Rouge Valley will become Canada?s first urban national park, with the help of?$144 million in?federal funding. The government will mete the money out over the next decade to create Rouge National Urban Park, a 47-square-kilometre green space bordered by Lake Ontario, Toronto, Markham and Pickering. The exact boundaries of the park haven?t been decided yet, but so far the proposed space is about 15 times larger than Central Park and within easy reach of seven million Canadians?a fifth of the country. At an announcement today, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said the government will seek consultation from the public and hopes the space will be a ?people?s park? (which is convenient, since some parkgoers will soon be taking the ?people?s highway? to get there).?[Globe and Mail]

HashTip collects and enhances tips from Facebook and Twitter friends

Surfacing the long-lost tips from people you trust is the promise of newly launched startup HashTip.

HashTip is a social network and content aggregator that collects, stores, and categorizes the tips previously posted by your friends on other services. The company ultimately aims to simplify the decision-making process around products, services, and activities by appending extra social insight to the nuggets it surfaces.

?People who are confused and frustrated with numerous options and a deluge of information on products and services are looking for a platform that can simplify all three aspects of a decision-making process: narrowing down options, deeper research on selected options, and finding the best price for the chosen option,? HashTip co-founder and CEO Rohit Vashisht explained to VentureBeat. ?Most people perform these steps offline and online, spending hours to make the final decision.?

The startup?s best asset is its ability to grab status updates on Twitter and Facebook with the #tip hashtag, pull them into HashTip, and then tack on all relevant review data from places like Amazon, Yelp, and Rotten Tomatoes. The company can also track down daily deals associated with tips to help members save as they revisit friends? recommendations.

But HashTip, at first glance, looks overwrought and lacking in a real answer to the, ?Okay, I?ve found a great tip, now what?? question. There?s far too many icons mushed together in a muddled interface for the first-timer to understand why she should come back.

That?s not to say HashTip is doomed to irrelevance. The young company will need to move away from the tired social network design to something a bit more novel, focus on mobile discovery, and do more to showcase the underlying technology should it wish to win over web folks.

Edison, New Jersey-based HashTip has raised $200,000 in seed funding.

HashTip is one of 80 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Spring 2012 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After we make our selections, the chosen companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.

Benefits-Of-Re-Financing | TravelBuddies.us ? Travel Tips

Benefits of Re-Financing

There are a number of benefits which may be associated with re-financing a home. While there are some situations where re-financing is not the right decision, there are a host of benefits which can be gained from re-financing under favorable conditions. Some of these benefits include lower monthly payments, debt consolidation and the ability to utilize the existing equity in the home. Homeowners who are considering re-financing should consider each of these options with their current financial situation to determine whether or not they wish to re-finance their home.

Lower Monthly Payments

For many homeowners the possibility of lower monthly payments is a very appealing benefit of re-financing. Many homeowners live paycheck to paycheck and for these homeowners finding an opportunity to increase their savings can be a monumental feat. Homeowners who are able to negotiate lower interest rates when they re-finance their home will likely see the benefit of lower monthly mortgage payments resulting from the decision to re-finance.

Each month homeowners submit a mortgage payment. This payment is typically used to repay a portion of the interest as well as a portion of the principle on the loan. Homeowners who are able to refinance their loan at a lower interest rate may see a decrease in the amount they are paying in both interest and principle. This may be due to the lower interest rate as well as the lower remaining balance. When a home is re-financed, a second mortgage is taken out to repay the first mortgage. If the existing mortgage was already a few years old, it is likely the homeowner already had some equity and had paid off some of the previous principle balance. This enables the homeowner to take out a smaller mortgage when they re-finance their home because they are repaying a smaller debt than the original purchase price of the home.

Debt Consolidation

Some homeowners begin to investigate re-financing for the purpose of debt consolidation. This is especially true for homeowners who have high interest debts such as credit card debts. A debt consolidation loan enables the homeowner to use the existing equity in their home as collateral to secure a low interest loan which is large enough to repay the existing balance on the home as well as a number of other debts such as credit card debt, car loans, student loans or any other debts the homeowner may have.

When re-financing is done of the purpose of debt consolidation there is not always an overall increase in savings. Those who are seeking to consolidate their debts are often struggling with their monthly payments and are seeking an option which makes it easier for the homeowner to manage their monthly bills.

Additionally, debt consolidation can also simplify the process of paying monthly bills. Homeowners who are apprehensive about participating in monthly bill pay programs may be overwhelmed by the amount of bills they have to pay each month. Even if the value of these bills is not worrisome just the act of writing several checks each month and ensuring they are sent, on time, to the correct location can be overwhelming. For this reason, many homeowners often re-finance their mortgage to minimize the amount of payments they are making each month.

Using the Existing Equity in the Home

Another popular reason for re-financing is to use the existing equity in the home. Homeowners who have a considerable amount of equity in their home may find they are able to cash out some of this equity for other purposes. This may include making improvements to the home, starting a business, taking a dream vacation or pursuing a higher degree of education. The homeowner is not limited in how they can use the equity in their home and may re-finance a home equity line of credit which can be used for any purpose imaginable. A home equity line of credit is different from a loan because the funds are not disbursed all at once. Rather the funds are made available to the homeowner and the homeowner can withdraw these finds at anytime during the draw period.

Donna Summer ? the Queen of Disco ? died this morning after a battle with cancer.

We?re told Summer was in Florida at the time of her death. She was 63 years old.

Sources close to Summer tell us ? the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps. We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago ? who says she didn?t seem too bad.

In fact, we?re told she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on.

Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the ?70s with iconic hits like ?Last Dance,? ?Hot Stuff? and ?Bad Girls.?

She continued her dominance in the ?80s with ?She Works Hard for the Money? and ?This Time I Know It?s for Real.?

Summer and her producer Giorgio Moroder defined the dance music era of the ?70s and influenced acts like Duran Duran and David Bowie to enter the genre.

Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano back in 1980. They had two daughters together.

We had the pleasure of shooting Donna back in 2009 on her way out of Mr Chow ? and she couldn?t have been nicer ? smiling, waving and signing for fans.

Business To Business Marketing: What is Business to Business ...

It has been common to hear the media and a lot of people in the corporate world talk about business to business marketing. If you listen to the American corporate World, it will not pass you to hear a lot of companies strategizing on how they will win not only the consumers but also the other businesses. It will be prudent that as you think of how you can win an individual consumer, you should also focus on targeting the big giants in the business world as you draw strategic plans towards the success of your business.

Business to business marketing is the marketing of goods and services to other businesses.

A lot of companies are providing their services to the other companies in their lines of production. Companies will therefore need each other in business. Banking institutions will keep money for the manufacturers or the same banks will also need printed papers or other services from the said manufacturers. That is just one example of business to business service. A good bank will try to strategize on how to win other businesses to open current or savings accounts with them. That is plainly a good example of business to business marketing.

Other good example of business to business marketing is where companies approaching others to buy raw materials for their processing functions. There are so many companies that are in the business of looking for companies to supply raw materials to them .The companies buying the raw materials may also need to do business to business marketing to win the other. There will be thus a kind of mutual relationship between the two companies.

If you are creating a business that at one point you will be required to do business to business marketing, it may mean that you will be supposed to demonstrate to the company that you will be marketing to why your products and services are better than those offered by the others that are offering to them.

Before you do business to business marketing, you should be well aware that the standards of the products and services that you are offering are supposed to be of higher standards than when you are selling to a consumer.
As opposed to business to consumer marketing, under the business to business marketing, you will be focusing on a more targeted market. You will not ignore the consumer in the picture because if the businesses you are targeting is not doing well in as far as the product that it is selling to the consumer is concerned, it will not buy the products that you will be selling much.

For business to business marketing, you must be able to focus on the following to have the best of the market:

Quality of the goods
You will have to provide goods and services that are of the highest quality to be able to win the attention of the other businesses.

Customer support
You must know how to win and maintain a customer, in this case being the fellow business, with excellent customer support.

Interview with a vampire; remix.

Hi folks,

So I'm sure the vampire meme is about done to death, but I'm looking to start up a fairly intimate advanced level roleplay to help keep me occupied while waiting for posts in my other large group rps, and I wanted a quick check on if this was a direction that would get any bites.

I'm thinking the rp ic lifespan of the vampire in question would cover literally hundreds of years and different locations and cultures, and of course multiple friendships, relationships and other bonds, (all explored flashback style as it was in the original book and movie) and my writing partner/s would be able to participate in the generation of some of those remembered characters and scenes, as well as the 'real time' role of the interviewer.

I'd be interested in small numbers, perhaps even as small as a one on one (thus the interview meme) with the option to bring a world of npcs to life in posts, and would need someone with the time on hand to post regularly, possibly multiple times a day. I'm used to live time rp in MUDs or chats, so the forum wait is challenging to work with. Plus I'm just getting off for summer and need to keep myself occupied. lol.

If this is something you think you might be interested in, drop a reply in this thread, and if there's enough interest I may go ahead and refine the idea some, before making an actual pitch for a partner or partners.

Thanks for your feedback~

Spain beset by bank crisis, downgrades, bond pressure

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's borrowing costs shot up at a bond auction on Thursday and its troubled banks suffered a double blow, with shares in part-nationalized Bankia diving and 16 lenders - including the euro zone's biggest - having their credit ratings cut.

Official data confirmed Spain was back in recession and a newspaper reported a big outflow of deposits from Bankia, but the government said it had taken a fundamental step to strengthen Spain's credibility by agreeing big budget cuts with the country's free-spending regions.

Moody's Investors Service cut the long-term debt and deposit ratings of the 16 Spanish banks, including Banco Santander, the euro zone's largest, saying the government's ability to support some banks had weakened.

Spain's banks, saddled with bad loans after a property boom collapsed, lie at the heart of the euro zone crisis as markets fear any major rescue would strain Madrid's already stretched finances and possibly require an international bailout.

Gary Jenkins, credit analyst at Swordfish Research, said Spain had problems which went beyond the risk of contagion from the crisis in Greece, whose future in the euro is in doubt

"Whilst the attention of the world is on Greece, the fact is that Spain faces many challenges irrespective of how the Greek situation is finally resolved," he wrote in a note.

Moody's cut the rating of BBVA, Spain's second largest lender, as well as Santander even though both are generally regarded as sound, unlike some of their smaller peers.

Nicholas Spiro of Spiro Sovereign Strategy said the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was not handling the crisis well. "Sentiment towards Spain is deteriorating with each passing day, mainly because of a loss of confidence in the Rajoy government's approach to tackling the problems in the banking sector," he said.

ATTRACTING BUYERS

At Thursday's debt auction, the Treasury had to pay around 5 percent to attract buyers of three- and four-year bonds. The latter sold with a yield of 5.106 percent, way above the 3.374 percent the last time it was auctioned.

"This ... fits the pattern of recent sales, with the Spanish treasury successfully getting its supply away but at ever-higher yields," said Richard McGuire, rate strategist at Rabobank in London. "This unfavorable trend looks set to remain firmly in place ... Ultimately, this ratcheting up of yields will likely require some form of outside intervention."

Spain officially slipped into recession in the first quarter this year, final figures confirmed on Thursday, leaving the country threatened with a prolonged slump as the turbulent euro zone struggles to balance austerity with growth.

The European Commission warned last week that high debts of the 17 regions, which account for about half of overall public spending, and the welfare system would prevent Spain meeting its goal of cutting the budget deficit to 5.3 percent of gross domestic product this year from 8.5 percent in 2011.

However, the government said the regions - most of which missed their deficit targets last year - had agreed to cut their spending by 13 billion euros and increase revenues by 5 billion euros.

After weeks of negotiations, Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro approved the plans presented by every region except for the small northern one of Asturias, which will have to produce a new budget within 15 days. "We've taken a fundamental step for Spain's credibility," Montoro told a news conference.

Overspending by the regions caused Spain to miss its deficit reduction target badly last year. Moody's agency downgraded on Thursday its ratings of four regions including two of the biggest, Catalonia and Andalucia.

Regions which meet their targets will get help from the state to cover their financing needs through a new mechanism which will be introduced by July. The government has been working for weeks on a new instrument called "hispanobonos" allowing the regions to issue debt underwritten by the Treasury.

WORRY LIST

Spain's 10-year debt yields have risen back above 6 percent, which investors view as a pivot point that could accelerate a climb to 7 percent, a cost of borrowing widely seen as unaffordable even though Madrid has raised well over half its needs for this year.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Wednesday his government could soon find it difficult to fund itself affordably on the bond market unless the pressure eases.

However, the government source said the Treasury could refinance itself at the current high yields for several months, although the country saw it aiss vital that funding costs fall.

Top of the country's worry list is a banking sector beset by bad loans, the result of a property boom that bust in 2008.

El Mundo newspaper reported that customers at Bankia had taken out more than 1 billion euros, equivalent to around 1 percent of the lender's retail and corporate deposits, over the past week. The government denied there had been an exit of funds, but the bank's shares closed down 14 percent on Thursday on top of steep losses over the past week.

"It's not true that there is an exit of deposits at this moment from Bankia," said Economy Secretary Fernando Jimenez Latorre. Bankia itself said that deposit activity was normal.

The government last week took over Bankia, the fourth-largest lender which holds around 10 percent of Spanish deposits, in an attempt to dispel concerns over its ability to deal with losses related to the 2008 property crash.

"The majority of outflows came after the chairman resigned last week, but I think once the bank was taken over by the government, depositors calmed down a bit," said one Madrid-based trader. "The share price fall has to do with disappointed retail investors dumping the stock."

Some savers were reassured by the deposit guarantee fund which covers 100,000 euros per customer.

"I have two accounts with Bankia and up to now I have not closed them. I'm not even considering it," said Jose Ignacio Gonzalez, 42. "It must be more secure with the backing of the state, it has a guarantee."

The problem for Madrid is that the property losses which banks face are not yet quantifiable, as prices are likely to fall further.

The government told the banking sector last week to set aside another 30 billion euros in provisions, prompting some analysts to say much more would need to be done.

RECESSION AND CONTAGION

While Greece, facing fresh elections which could hasten its exit from the euro zone, has dominated headlines, uncertainty over the final cost of Spain's banking reform has raised the prospect that it could also require an international bailout, a bill the euro zone would be stretched to cover.

Official data confirmed the Spanish economy shrank 0.3 percent in the first quarter, putting it back into recession. Unemployment is already running close to 25 percent, rising to around 50 percent among the young.

Even if it puts its house in order, Madrid faces the threat of contagion from Greece if it elects an anti-bailout government next month, a move which could hasten a hard default and exit from the euro zone.

"It's not Greece leaving the euro that is the major issue," said John Bearman, chief investment officer at Thomas Miller Investment, which manages roughly 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) of assets. "It's the domino effect."

HAZE music, discography, MP3, videos and reviews

Haze biography
German band HAZE's 1971 album Hazecolor-Dia is primarily remembered today for possessing an interesting album cover. The cover, which was designed by NINE DAYS' WONDER founder and singer Walter SEYFFER, featured a plastic transparency over a picture of the band to create a slide picture frame. Neat, huh? Copies of the original vinyl are quite expensive these days.

The music behind the plastic transparency deserves some warrant too, but unfortunately, many of the details about Haze are unknown (including the name of their flute player). What is know is that Haze was made up of Kurt FREI on drums, Hans-Jurg FREI on rhythm guitar and organ, Heinz SCHWAB on lead guitar, Christian SCHERLER on vocals, and Dietmar LOW on bass and acting as solo songwriter. Their only record was produced by Peter HAUKE and Dieter DIERKS, who also produced NEKTAR's debut album.

HAZE dished out a brand of heavy, spacey, funky art rock that is most successfully compared to THE ARTHUR BROWN BAND, ARTHUR BROWN'S KINGDOM COME and CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, due to the music's bluesy feel and Scherler's vocals, which jump from dark gravel to over the top screeching.

It would also be safe to also compare the group to other members of the Krautrock scene, as well as heavy blues bands that were transitioning out of the psychedelic era into the 70's. However, Haze came equipped with a tricky sense of humor, best evident in the lyrics of "A Way To Find The Paradise". Unafraid to jam, the songs are loaded with lengthy instrumental passages that highlight Schwab's guitar skills (and the shortest track clocks in at a mere six and a half minutes). Recommended for all the freak rock fans out there.

The counts below detail the atrocities during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war that Mladic is accused of commanding.

COUNT 1: GENOCIDE

Ratko Mladic, along with other former Serbian and Bosnian Serb leaders is accused of "destroying" entire groups of Muslim and Croat communities in various parts of Bosnia. These include the 3-year relentless shelling of the capital, Sarajevo, and several other small towns such as Foca, where Serbs were particularly brutal, executing local Muslims and throwing them into a river. Some of the remains were only found last year.

COUNT 2: GENOCIDE

This count of genocide refers to the mass killing of over 7,000 men and boys in Srebrenica, in July 1995, which is Europe's worst bloodshed since World War II. Mladic's troops executed almost the entire Srebrenica male population in a few days, burying them later in mass graves around the town. Many were later found with their hands tied behind their back and identification of the remains is still ongoing.

COUNT 3: PERSECUTIONS

The count relates to the persecution on political and religious grounds against Bosnia's Muslims and Croats in the Serb-controlled towns like Banja Luka, in western Bosnia, or Bijeljina in the east. Non-Serbs in these and other towns were evicted from their homes by Serb troops, held in prison camps, tortured, raped and killed. Images or skinny, naked prisoners from the camps in western Bosnia in 1992-93 reminded the world of the Nazi-era camps.

COUNTS 4, 5 and 6: EXTERMINATION, MURDER

These counts of the indictment refer to the widespread killings of non-Serbs that took place in the territories under the Bosnian Serb control, but also on the brutal attacks on the capital, Sarajevo, which prosecutors say were designed to "spread terror." Mladic's troops from 1992-95 were constantly sniping and shelling Sarajevo, killing thousands of civilians, the longest siege of a capital city since WWII.

COUNTS 7 AND 8: DEPORTATION, INHUMANE ACTS

Mladic's troops also used forced deportation and various inhumane acts, such as sexual violence, killing, and destruction of houses and cultural monuments and sacred sites, to rid the Serb-controller territories of non-Serbs. This was started in 1992 in what became known as ethnic cleansing. Entire communities were forcefully displaced and the U.N. Security Council set up so-called safe havens in 1993 to protect those communities from Serb troops. Those included Srebrenica, Zepa , Gorazde and Sarajevo.

COUNTS 9 AND 10: TERROR, UNLAWFUL ATTACKS

The main focus of this count is on the siege of Sarajevo and the campaign of sniping and shelling to spread terror among the civilian population. Mladic's forces sniped and shelled civilians as they conducted every day civilian activities. People were injured and killed inside their homes. The lack of gas, electricity or running water forced people to leave their homes, where they were targeted. People were also targeted while queuing for water or in the markets. Two mortar attacks on the Markale markets killed more than one hundred people and wounded more than 200.

COUNT 11: TAKING OF HOSTAGES

This separate count refers to the events in 1995, when Mladic's troops took hostage U.N. peacekeepers in Bosnia to force NATO to prevent attacks on Bosnian Serb positions around Sarajevo. Between approximately 26 May 1995 and 19 June 1995, Bosnian Serb forces detained over 200 U.N. peacekeepers and military observers in various locations, sending out images of peacekeepers tied to antennas or radars in a warning to NATO. Some of the detainees were assaulted or otherwise maltreated during their captivity. They were released in several stages after an intervention from then-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
