Common Estate Planning Mistakes

Maria Kontopos, Esq.Proper estate planning goes beyond allocating money or other assets. Individuals commonly make estate planning mistakes without even realizing the implications of their decisions. These mistakes can be avoided by arming yourself with adequate knowledge about estate planning. Here are a few common mistakes made by individuals in estate planning:

Procrastination. If you do not create an estate plan, your state legislature will create a plan of its own. The state?s plan, called the laws of intestacy, dictates who will get your assets and how they will get them. Also, many individuals do not realize that estate planning also includes the preparation of documents such as Durable Powers of Attorney for Finance, Health Care Powers of Attorney and Living Wills. Failure to prepare these documents does not ensure a person?s wishes are clearly documented. Regardless of the size of the estate, preparing an estate plan can help prevent quarreling among family members who believe they know what?s best for an individual?s care and how the estate should be handled after death.

Property Transfers Based on Non-Will Provisions. Most people think their Will controls who will get what when they die. However, many assets, such as bank accounts, certificates of deposit, retirement plans, annuities, life insurance policies and real estate are often not controlled by Wills. In the case of jointly-owned assets, the surviving joint owner often becomes the sole owner of the assets. Retirement plans, annuities and life insurance proceeds transfer to named beneficiaries, not necessarily to the people named in a Will. Why does this matter? Assets can flow to the wrong people due to old, wrong and/or out-of-date designations, often with unintended estate and income tax implications.

Online or Do-It-Yourself Rather Than Professionals. There has been a noticeable rise in the number of people who will look to the Internet to prepare their own Wills and Trusts. There are dozens of websites that will profess to offer you just the right discounted estate planning documents. Unfortunately, relying on web-based, do it yourself solutions is a recipe for disaster. Estate planning documents should represent the culmination of a well thought out financial and estate plan. Internet sites can provide you with documents, but no actual advice that fits in the context of your specific financial and personal life.

Leaving Assets Outright to Adult Children. There has been a growing opinion for families that assets should remain in trust, even for adult children, for as long as possible for asset protection and other benefits that a trust can offer. The bigger questions become who should really benefit from the fruits of my labor and how do I protect those assets from creditors, potential creditors and ex-spouses? Whether or not to leave assets in trust for adult children depends on many factors; not the least of which is personal preference.

You Have the Wrong Guardian Listed for Your Children. A Will is a mechanism to give instructions as to who you choose as guardians to care for your children. If you do not have a Will, your state decides who will care for them at a hearing. Check to see if your original guardian is still valid. A judge is required to act in the best interest of the child, so also consider writing a letter of explanation as to why you chose this guardian.

Portugal's Monster: The Mechanics Of A Massive Wave

YouTube

American surfer Garrett "GMAC" McNamara rides what could be, if confirmed, the biggest wave conquered in history as a crowd watches Monday in Nazare, Portugal.

The photos and video are heart-stopping ? the tiny figure of extreme surfer Garrett McNamara balancing on his board as he slides down what's being billed as a record-breaking, 100-foot wall of water.

Perhaps just as amazing as McNamara's feat Monday is the sight of the monster swell itself rearing up and then exploding onto the rocky coastline in Nazare, Portugal. "In Nazare," the Hawaiian surfer told Time, "the ocean is known as a place of death, not of riding waves."

It's where he set the world record in 2011 for the biggest wave ever surfed and where he married his wife in November.

Nazare's giant waves are generated by factors peculiar to that part of the European coast, says Micah Sklut, forecaster and CEO at Swellinfo.com, a surf forecasting site.

"You get big storms in the North Atlantic in the wintertime that push swells toward Europe," says Sklut, who is himself a surfer.

The sheer size of the wave McNamara rode was triggered by a "massive storm" that day off Ireland, he says. But Nazare's rare undersea geography ? a deep canyon that points like an arrow toward the town ? is what creates the ideal conditions for the kind of waves in the video.

"Normally, what happens is that the open-ocean swells, as they approach the coastline, they're going to be slowed down by the ocean bottom as it gets shallower," Sklut says. "But at Nazare, for example, the ocean swells get focused in this submarine canyon and have much more energy."

At its deepest, the Nazare Canyon is some 16,000 feet from the ocean's surface, according to the Portuguese Hydrographic Office. By contrast, the Grand Canyon in Arizona is about 6,000 feet deep at its lowest point.

"So, first you've got really deep water, and then as it approaches the shore it gets very shallow, and that enables the waves to climb really, really big all of a sudden," Sklut says.

Similar conditions exist in other "big wave" spots ? Teahupoo, Tahiti; the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii; the Cortes Bank about 100 miles from Los Angeles and Mavericks on Northern California's coast.

Hendrik Tolman, an ocean wave expert at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, compares the canyon's effect to a lens focusing light and says there's "no hard upper limit" to the size that waves can get. He notes there have been observations of waves offshore that were well over 110 feet.

While Tolman agrees that McNamara's wave was "very, very high," he and some other wave experts are circumspect about whether it actually hit 100 feet. Because there was no instrumentation at Nazare to scientifically measure the wave from trough to crest, McNamara and his team are relying on an old surfer's yardstick ? comparing the apparent size of the wave to the size of the people in photos.

"That's not very accurate," Tolman says. "You can see the peak of the wave, but you can't see the bottom of the trough very well."

When it comes to finding and riding such giants, Sklut says two things are key: better wave forecasting and Jet Skis. If you look closely at the video of McNamara or other extreme surfers, you'll often see a Jet Ski peeling away just as a surfer starts a run down the wave face ? a technique known as a "tow-in" that was pioneered by surfer Laird Hamilton and some friends in the early 1990s.

"If you think of a 100-foot wave, breaking in say 100 feet of water, that's a pretty fast wave, which is why you use Jet Skis to get on to them," says Tim Janssen, a surfer who is a physical oceanographer at Theiss Research in La Jolla, Calif.

"Absolutely, 1,000 percent, they would not be riding these waves without a Jet Ski," Sklut says. "These waves are moving so fast and there's so much water that it would be virtually impossible to paddle into a wave like Garrett rode without a Jet Ski."

Then there's the wipeout.

Hamilton has called it "the moment where you totally relinquish any true control over what you're doing."

"There's no place really in life that does it quite like that ? when you do fall and you do get hit by [the water], you're just at the mercy of the wave and it dictates," he said in 2010. "And sometimes those are the most thrilling rides of all. Unfortunately."

Janssen says a wipeout on a wave that size probably feels "exponentially heavier than anything that normal people surf."

Surviving takes training in such things as holding your breath. Surfers such as Hamilton and McNamara can hold it for two minutes plus, Sklut says. When it comes to wiping out in big surf, "you kind of have to let it do what it wants to do and try to relax," he says, though he admits he has never surfed anything close to the really big ones.

"On a personal level, I cannot even relate," Sklut says. "I wouldn't go near that. I don't need that much of a rush."

New OHSU research helps explain early-onset puberty in females

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

New research from Oregon Health & Science University has provided significant insight into the reasons why early-onset puberty occurs in females. The research, which was conducted at OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center, is published in the current early online edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The paper explains how OHSU scientists are investigating the role of epigenetics in the control of puberty. Epigenetics refers to changes in gene activity linked to external factors that do not involve changes to the genetic code itself. The OHSU scientists believe improved understanding of these complex protein/gene interactions will lead to greater understanding of both early-onset (precocious) puberty and delayed puberty, and highlight new therapy avenues.

To conduct this research, scientists studied female rats, which like their human counterparts, go through puberty as part of their early aging process. These studies revealed that a group of proteins, called PcG proteins, regulate the activity of a gene called the Kiss1 gene, which is required for puberty to occur. When these PcG proteins diminish, Kiss1 is activated and puberty begins.

PcG proteins are produced by another set of genes that act as a biological switch during the embryonic stage of life. The role of these proteins is to turn off specific downstream genes at key developmental stages.

OHSU scientists found that both the activity of these "master" genes and their ability to turn off puberty are impacted by two forms of epigenetic control: a chemical modification of DNA known as DNA methylation, and changes in the composition of histones, a specialized set of proteins that modify gene activity by interacting with DNA.

Using this new information, researchers were then able to delay puberty in female rats. They accomplished this by increasing PcG protein levels in the hypothalamus of the brain using a targeted gene therapy approach so that Kiss1 activation failed to occur at the normal time in life. The hypothalamus is a region of the brain that controls reproductive development.

"While it was always understood that an organism's genes determine the timing of puberty, the role of epigenetics in this process has never been recorded until now," said Alejandro Lomniczi, Ph.D., a scientist in the Division of Neuroscience at the OHSU Oregon National Primate Research Center.

"Because epigenetic changes are driven by environmental, metabolic and cell-to-cell influences, these findings raise the possibility that a significant percentage of precocious and delayed puberty cases occurring in humans may be the result of environmental factors and other alterations in epigenetic control," said Sergio Ojeda, D.V.M, who is also a scientist in the Division of Neuroscience at the OHSU ONPRC.

"There is also much more to be learned about the way that epigenetic factors may link environmental factors such as nutrition, man-made chemicals, social interactions and other day-today influences to the timing and completion of normal puberty."

Hunger Games Fans Are So Hardcore They Found the Catching Fire Cornucopia Photos On Google Maps

Catching Fire satellite set photos Cornucopia Google Maps Quarter Quell

From what we?ve read of Suzanne Collins? The Hunger Games trilogy, the internet doesn?t exist in dystopian Panem (a.k.a. North America about 100 years from now). How lucky we are, then, that Google Maps still exists in 2013!

Eagle-eyed fans @starfishtony and @Whedonite96?spotted these satellite images of the Quarter Quell Cornucopia and tribute parade from the upcoming Catching Fire movie on Google Maps. Yes, Hunger Games fans are that committed that they?ve taken to the skies to scrape together every bit of intel we can since we have to wait til November 22 for the movie.

What?s interesting is that, while the Catching Fire crew shot most of the Arena scenes in Hawaii, they couldn?t quite build a Cornucopia on any of the islands.?We got a hint as just how much work was going to go into the Arena for the 75th Hunger Games when director Francis Lawrence?spoke with MTV News?last week. ?The Arena stuff is pretty tricky,? he explained, ?just because [of] the sort of center of the Arena where the Cornucopia exists and the water and the spokes. The circular beach with the jungle around it doesn?t exist, so we have to sort of piece it all together.?

Shortly after that quote was published, Mockingjay.net unearthed an article?from the?Atlanta Journal-Constitution?from September 2012 discussing how a man-made beach (called, creatively ?The Beach?) in Georgia?s Clayton County would indeed serve as the center of the Arena. The beach was originally built as a beach vollyeball venue for the 1996 Olympics, but workers drained and refilled the lake for filming.

This fan-made image from deviantART user alternatecoppa gives a better idea of how the Cornucopia fits into the devious Arena:

Catching Fire satellite set photos Cornucopia Google Maps Quarter Quell

But let?s not forget the other great satellite image of the tribute parade! Feast your eyes on the Atlanta Motor Speedway, which will act as the Capitol where Panem?s twelve districts unveil their Quarter Quell tributes (all of them former victors). Fan site The Hob previously posted close-ups of the chariots and horses.

Catching Fire satellite set photos Cornucopia Google Maps Quarter Quell tribute parade

Meanwhile, NorthJersey.com confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence filmed several District 12 scenes in Ramapo State Forest, taking advantage of the icy weather to make Katniss? home look extra-bleak.

Doubtless there are some fans who may be miffed about seeing these raw set photos, like the paparazzi shots of Lawrence and co. filming in Hawaii. However, I?m of the opinion that there?s so much left to be done in post-production before we get this final product. Alternate images of the Speedway show tons of green-screen curtain, which means there are plenty of visual effects that we can?t even guess at right now.

For the moment, let?s treat this as a fun set visit that we wouldn?t be able to do without the internet.

ZTE V81 Siap Saingi iPad Mini ?

Rabu, 30 Januari 2013 | 16:56 WIB

ZTE belum memastikan berapa harga jual V81.

Bioinspired fibers change color when stretched

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

A team of materials scientists at Harvard University and the University of Exeter, UK, have invented a new fiber that changes color when stretched. Inspired by nature, the researchers identified and replicated the unique structural elements that create the bright iridescent blue color of a tropical plant's fruit.

The multilayered fiber, described today in the journal Advanced Materials, could lend itself to the creation of smart fabrics that visibly react to heat or pressure.

"Our new fiber is based on a structure we found in nature, and through clever engineering we've taken its capabilities a step further," says lead author Mathias Kolle, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). "The plant, of course, cannot change color. By combining its structure with an elastic material, however, we've created an artificial version that passes through a full rainbow of colors as it's stretched."

Since the evolution of the first eye on Earth more than 500 million years ago, the success of many organisms has relied upon the way they interact with light and color, making them useful models for the creation of new materials. For seeds and fruit in particular, bright color is thought to have evolved to attract the agents of seed dispersal, especially birds.

The fruit of the South American tropical plant, Margaritaria nobilis, commonly called "bastard hogberry," is an intriguing example of this adaptation. The ultra-bright blue fruit, which is low in nutritious content, mimics a more fleshy and nutritious competitor. Deceived birds eat the fruit and ultimately release its seeds over a wide geographic area.

"The fruit of this bastard hogberry plant was scientifically delightful to pick," says principal investigator Peter Vukusic, Associate Professor in Natural Photonics at the University of Exeter. "The light-manipulating architecture its surface layer presents, which has evolved to serve a specific biological function, has inspired an extremely useful and interesting technological design."

Vukusic and his collaborators at Harvard studied the structural origin of the seed's vibrant color. They discovered that the upper cells in the seed's skin contain a curved, repeating pattern, which creates color through the interference of light waves. (A similar mechanism is responsible for the bright colors of soap bubbles.) The team's analysis revealed that multiple layers of cells in the seed coat are each made up of a cylindrically layered architecture with high regularity on the nano- scale.

The team replicated the key structural elements of the fruit to create flexible, stretchable and color-changing photonic fibers using an innovative roll-up mechanism perfected in the Harvard laboratories.

"For our artificial structure, we cut down the complexity of the fruit to just its key elements," explains Kolle. "We use very thin fibers and wrap a polymer bilayer around them. That gives us the refractive index contrast, the right number of layers, and the curved, cylindrical cross-section that we need to produce these vivid colors."

The researchers say that the process could be scaled up and developed to suit industrial production.

"Our fiber-rolling technique allows the use of a wide range of materials, especially elastic ones, with the color-tuning range exceeding by an order of magnitude anything that has been reported for thermally drawn fibers," says coauthor Joanna Aizenberg, Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science at Harvard SEAS, and Kolle's adviser. The fibers' superior mechanical properties, combined with their demonstrated color brilliance and tunability, make them very versatile. For instance, the fibers can be wound to coat complex shapes. Because the fibers change color under strain, the technology could lend itself to smart sports textiles that change color in areas of muscle tension, or that sense when an object is placed under strain as a result of heat.

Minneapolis mayor candidates on the Twitter trail

Posted at 7:00 AM on January 30, 2013 by Curtis Gilbert (1 Comments)

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is among the most avid tweeters in Minnesota politics. The candidates vying to replace him have some catching up to do.

how much they tweet IV.jpg

As the chart shows, only Council Member Betsy Hodges approaches the mayor's Twitter acumen. But several other candidates have recently begun to ramp up their social media activity.

Council Member Gary Schiff, who maintains an active (and at times irreverent) Facebook presence, has only 24 tweets to his name in the last four years. But 19 of them were posted since mid-December, right around the time he formed his mayoral exploratory committee.

Council Member Don Samuels and former Council Member Jackie Cherryhomes both signed up for Twitter last spring, but they each appear to have found their 140-character voices this month. Samuels kicks off his campaign today. Cherryhomes will do so in the coming weeks.

School Board Member Hussein Samatar has a relatively robust Twitter presence, but hasn't decided whether he'll run. Theater executive Tom Hoch, Park Board Commissioner Bob Fine and former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew are also thinking about running, but none of them appear to have Twitter accounts. At least not yet.

Gov. Scott will seek $1.2 billion more for Florida schools

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced Wednesday he will ask the Legislature to increase funding for public schools by $1.2 billion next year.

Speaking to the annual AP news forum in Tallahassee, Scott presented a case that Florida's economy has steadily improved under his direction and that now is the time to "strategically invest" in public education.

Scott will make his full budget recommendations to the Legislature at the state Capitol Thursday.

Speaking from a prepared text, Scott defended his proposal to give all public school teachers a $2,500 across-the-board raise, which has come under fire from legislative leaders who say it should be tied to classroom performance.

"I have never met an educator who wants bad teachers to be rewarded," Scott said. "The educators that I know support accountability."

Scott also listed as a top priority the elimination of the sales tax on manufacturers' equipment purchases, which he said would save businesses $144 million in taxes.

City officials probed for negligence over Brazil nightclub fire

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Prosecutors in southern Brazil, where 235 people died when a fire ravaged the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria last weekend, are investigating whether city leaders and inspectors were negligent in allowing the club to operate.

The investigation, which is separate from a criminal probe into the causes of the tragedy, comes after police said the club's sole exit was partially blocked and that fire extinguishers and emergency exit lights weren't working.

Investigators say the lapses led to the stampede and consequent trampling and suffocation that killed most of the fire's victims.

"There is a political dimension to what happened," Cesar Augusto Carlan, a public prosecutor for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where the fire occurred, said in an interview on Wednesday.

He said the investigation sought to determine what fault may lie with the city, fire inspectors, and any other enforcement officials who had allowed the nightclub to operate.

In a news conference late Tuesday, Santa Maria's mayor, Cesar Schirmer, said city inspectors visited the club last April after it had undergone remodeling and found no reason to revoke its operating permit.

He said his mind was "at ease" that city hall had "fulfilled its obligation."

Schirmer added: "The establishment, in our view, had no irregularities. If any measures or inspections should have been taken, that was the responsibility of the fire department."

The local fire department, for its part, reiterated in a statement late Tuesday that it was in the process of renewing the club's safety permit when the fire occurred, but that the establishment was authorized to operate in the meantime.

It added, however, that the club appears to have committed several safety violations, noting that it did not have a permit allowing the sort of pyrotechnics that sparked the fire and that regulations require that the exit remain unobstructed, which wasn't the case.

"If there had been a request to use pyrotechnics in the nightclub Kiss, the fire department would not have authorized it," the statement read.

Further details of the tragedy continue to emerge.

Police said one of the club's owners, who with his co-owner is in police custody for questioning, on Tuesday tried to choke himself with a shower hose at a local hospital in a suicide attempt. The owner, identified by police as Elissandro Spohr, told officials he could not bear the strain of the tragedy.

In addition to the two club owners, two members of Gurizada Fandangueira, the band that was performing at the club, also are in custody for questioning. One of the band members, police say, lit an outdoor flare during its show, igniting overhead soundproofing material from which the fire rapidly spread.

None of the four men has been charged with any crime.

Local authorities have revised the death toll from the tragedy to 235, following the death of an injured man in hospital and a recount of the confirmed dead. Late on Tuesday, 121 people remained in hospital, 83 of them on respirators.

Some of those being treated are suffering complications from the toxic chemicals they inhaled during the fire.

Taking the stairs, raking leaves may have same health benefits as a trip to the gym

Jan. 28, 2013 ? New research at Oregon State University suggests the health benefits of small amounts of activity -- even as small as one- and two-minute increments that add up to 30 minutes per day -- can be just as beneficial as longer bouts of physical exercise achieved by a trip to the gym.

The nationally representative study of more than 6,000 American adults shows that an active lifestyle approach, as opposed to structured exercise, may be just as beneficial in improving health outcomes, including preventing metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

"Our results suggest that engaging in an active lifestyle approach, compared to a structured exercise approach, may be just as beneficial in improving various health outcomes," said Paul Loprinzi, lead author of the study. "We encourage people to seek out opportunities to be active when the choice is available. For example, rather than sitting while talking on the phone, use this opportunity to get in some activity by pacing around while talking."

Perhaps just as importantly, the researchers found that 43 percent of those who participated in the "short bouts" of exercise met physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes day. In comparison, less than 10 percent of those in the longer exercise bouts met those federal guidelines for exercise.

Loprinzi, who is an assistant professor at Bellarmine University, conducted the research as a doctoral student working in the lab of Brad Cardinal at Oregon State University. Cardinal, a professor of exercise and sport science, is co-author of the study, which is in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion.

"You hear that less than 10 percent of Americans exercise and it gives the perception that people are lazy," Cardinal said. "Our research shows that more than 40 percent of adults achieved the exercise guidelines, by making movement a way of life."

Cardinal, who has studied the "lifestyle exercise" model for more than 20 years, said one of the most common barriers people cite to getting enough exercise is lack of time. He said the results of this study are promising, and show that simply building movement into everyday activities can have meaningful health benefits.

"This is a more natural way to exercise, just to walk more and move around a bit more," Cardinal said. "We are designed by nature as beings who are supposed to move. People get it in their minds, if I don't get that 30 minutes, I might as well not exercise at all. Our results really challenge that perception and give people meaningful, realistic options for meeting the physical activity guidelines."

For example, Cardinal said instead of driving half a mile, try biking or walking the same distance; instead of using a riding lawn mower, use a push lawn mower. Instead of sitting through TV commercials, try doing some sit-ups, push-ups, or jumping jacks during the commercial breaks; and instead of sitting and being a spectator at a child's sporting event, try walking around during the halftime break.

The researchers said the participants in this study wore accelerometers, which is an objective tool to measure physical activity. Those who participated in the short bouts of activity could be moving as few as one or two minutes at a time. The people in the "short bouts" group had positive results in areas such as blood pressure, cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and waist circumference.

For instance, the study showed those in the shorter exercise group who met physical activity guidelines had an 89 percent chance of not having metabolic syndrome, compared to 87 percent for those meeting guidelines using the structured exercise approach.

Loprinzi said the one area where small bursts of activity did not seem to equal the benefits of longer, sustained exercise was in Body Mass Index, or BMI. However, the researchers cautioned that these findings do not necessarily mean that short bouts of activity do not help with weight loss, especially since they did find a benefit on weight circumference.

"There are inherent limitations in BMI as a surrogate measure of fat and health in general," Cardinal said. "People can still be 'fit' and 'fat.'"

The researchers emphasized that for health benefits, people should seek out opportunities to be physically active.

"In our society, you will always be presented with things that entice you to sit or be less active because of technology, like using a leaf blower instead of a rake," Cardinal said. "Making physical activity a way of life is more cost-effective than an expensive gym membership. You may be more likely to stick with it, and over the long term, you'll be healthier, more mobile and just feel better all around."

New technique sheds light on RNA

Jan. 28, 2013 ? When researchers sequence the RNA of cancer cells, they can compare it to normal cells and see where there is more RNA. That can help lead them to the gene or protein that might be triggering the cancer.

But other than spotting a few known instigators, what does it mean? Is there more RNA because it's synthesizing too quickly or because it's not degrading fast enough? What part of the biological equilibrium is off?

After more than a decade of work, researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed a technique to help answer those questions.

The method involves a compound called bromouridine, which can be used to tag or label newly created RNA. Researchers apply the bromouridine for 30 minutes then isolate the RNA to see where the new RNA was made. They call this process Bru-Seq.

On the other hand, the researchers can follow up the bromouridine labeling with a rinse with the chemical uridine for different periods of time. They call this BruChase-Seq because the uridine chases away the newly made RNA so they can look at how the RNA ages over the course of one hour, two hours or six hours. In other words, is the RNA degrading like it's supposed to?

"We can see the whole pattern of all the RNA that's synthesized and all the RNA that's stable vs. degrading. We can sort it out in terms of synthesis and stability and see if a particular RNA is more stable in the cancer cell than the normal cell or if it is taking longer to degrade in the cancer cell than in the normal cell," says study author Mats Ljungman, Ph.D., associate professor of radiation oncology at the U-M Medical School.

"With our technique, we're adding 10-fold more depth to the picture of how genes are expressed," he adds.

Ljungman is part of the Cancer Center's new Translational Oncology Program, which brings together cancer researchers from across the University of Michigan to speed the translation of basic science into clinical trials and new treatment opportunities for patients.

The Cancer Center is currently using gene sequencing techniques to help match advanced cancer patients with potential clinical trial opportunities based on the make-up of their tumor.

In addition to helping with cancer sequencing, Ljungman sees potential for this new technique to help with identifying diseases such as diabetes or inflammation. In the paper describing the technique, published online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers describe how they used it to understand an inflammatory response in cells. The researchers have also used the technique to test blood samples.

With a great deal more investigation, Ljungman envisions that one day the test could potentially be offered to people visiting their doctor as a way to monitor changes in the RNA.

"If something is significantly changed from one test to the next, it could be a red flag or an early warning sign of disease. That would be the broadest use of this technology," Ljungman says.

Platelet Rich Plasma - Fitness & Weight Loss Tips

National Pain Institute , the leading pain clinics in South Florida , are now offering cutting edge platelet rich plasma therapy. Termed PRP for short, the injections offer pain relief by helping to repair injured tissue rather than simply masking pain.

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) January 02, 2013

Platelet rich plamsa calls in an individual?s stem cells to regenerate the damaged tissue. For more information and scheduling, call (561) 600-1046.

PRP has become state of the art for pain management West Palm Beach and all of Palm Beach County as regenerative medicine becomes mainstream. Most treatments currently have been successful at helping with pain by masking it, rather than actually correcting the problem. While these treatments, such as cortisone shots, are excellent at short term pain relief, they are not actually correcting the damaged tissue.

Platelet rich plasma consists of blood from the patient that is ?spun down? into a concentrate of platelets and growth factors that have the possibility to repair damaged ligaments, tendons and cartilage. PRP actually calls in the patient?s own stem cells as well which help in tissue repair as well.

To date, PRP injections have shown satisfactory results in preliminary studies, including a study by Sampson et al from a 2008 Current Review Musculoskeletal Medicine study. The PRP therapy was shown to produce good results for tendinitis of the elbow, hip, shoulder, knee, and ankle. Along with the soft tissue benefits, arthritis is also showing satisfactory results.

The Board Certified pain doctors at NPI offer platelet rich plasma injections as an outpatient treatment. NPI has a location in Delray Beach along with a Port St. Lucie pain management clinic. National Pain also has three locations around Orlando, a clinic in New Port Richey, and near Ocala as well.

More information and scheduling is available at (561) 600-1046.

Holocaust archive reunites relatives after decades

Nearly 70 years after the end of the Second World War, a Holocaust archive in Germany is helping victims and survivors of Nazi atrocities to find clues about the past -- and is still reuniting families. NBC News' Andy Eckardt reports from Bad Arolsen, Germany.

By Andy Eckardt, Producer, NBC News

BAD AROLSEN, Germany -- Wilhelm Thiem may be 72 but he celebrated his first real birthday in November.

Abducted in Poland by Nazi troops at age two, Thiem has spent most of his life on a painful journey, seeking to discover his true name and identity.?

Until just a few months ago, the retired entrepreneur had not known his birth date, where he was born, what had happened to his mother or whether he had any other family members.

"I hardly knew anything about my personal history," Thiem said.?"I always felt like an outsider, it was a feeling of not belonging in this world."

Thiem was raised by a foster parent in northern Germany who was appointed by the Nazis to take care of the young child. Thiem called her "Mrs. Huebner" but was later officially adopted and given her maiden name.

At age 12, Thiem learned that Mrs. Huebner was not his real mother. He started asking her about his past, wanting to learn more about his family, but his questions remained unanswered. For decades, his personal history remained a mystery.

Early last year, Thiem came across a newspaper article about the International Tracing Service?(ITS), an organization that maintains a vast archive of files related to more than 17.5 million victims of the Holocaust and Nazi oppression.

"At first the ITS researchers told me that they could not find any documents with my name on them," Thiem recalled. "But then they contacted the Red Cross in Poland and in the end, there were some leads."

'Very emotional moment'
After several months of research, Thiem was informed that he had been born in Lodz, Poland, and that his birth name was Zbigniew Wilhelm Katmierczak.

For the first time in his life, Thiem held a birth certificate in his hands that gave him an identity.

"It was a very emotional moment," Thiem recalled. "Both my wife and I could not hold back tears."

Researchers revealed that his mother was also sent to Germany as a forced laborer but later returned to Poland. She eventually married a Frenchman and relocated to France.

Thiem was also told of a surviving aunt, who still lives in his Polish hometown.

He is now anxiously making plans for a trip to Lodz with his wife for a very special family reunion.

"I am hoping to learn more facts, maybe find other family members," Thiem said. "Maybe I can find traces of my mother and father.?All of this is of huge interest to me, it means so much."

Established by Allies in the final days of the Second World War and originally run by the Red Cross, the ITS helps to uncover the fates of Holocaust victims and others who suffered under the Nazi regime.

The archive in Bad Arolsen is said to be the largest storage facility of documents related to the Holocaust. It includes 30 million documents in 16 miles of shelves housing information about Holocaust survivors, displaced persons, slave laborers and political refugees from former Eastern Bloc countries.

Over the past 50 years, the ITS has answered more than 10 million requests. About 1,000 search requests continue to trickle in to the archive monthly.

"Many people still do not know what has become of their loved ones,"?said Dr. Ingeborg Berggreen-Merkel from Germany's federal commission of culture. "Even decades after the end of the Holocaust and the war, there is this persisting uncertainty, which results from the fact that part of one's own history remains untold."?

Visitors to the archive come into direct contact with the bureaucracy of mass murder.

Its meticulous records include concentration camp files, "deportation cards," patient records and a post-war index of non-German citizens. Its researchers plow through the stacks of yellowing paper, registering and scanning as many of the historic documents as possible. More than 95 percent have now been digitized.

But due to concerns about the victims' privacy, the ITS and the German government kept the files closed to the public for half a century. While search requests have been accepted since the end of the war, the archive was initially not "open source."

Following public pressure from survivor groups, historians and researchers, who called for public access to the archives, the ITS Commission -- consisting of 11 member states -- declared itself in favor of opening up Bad Arolsen in 1998.

Yet, scholars and researchers were only given access to the documents beginning in 2007.

"I think it was criminal that the documents were not opened up earlier," said Holocaust survivor and U.S. judge Thomas Buergenthal. He was able to find?records of his father's ordeal in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald at Bad Arolsen.

"This archive is my father's only memorial, we have no other," Buergenthal added.

But although time has claimed many eyewitnesses, the archive is still helping to reunite survivors of Nazi terror -- such as Thiem and his long lost aunt. She remembers her nephew -- who is now an elderly man -- as a "little child."

"I spent a lifetime wondering who I really am, now I know," Thiem said.

Turmeric Tea Soothes the Body and Senses | Pure Home and Body ...

Tumeric Tea Soothes The Body & SensesTurmeric tea is one of my favorite things to drink in the winter. It?s a nice substitute for some teas that I usually drink, one that I welcome when the temperatures fall and the snow comes. Ayurveda is the holistic lifestyle of yoga. The principles of Ayurveda lie in respecting the natural change in seasons and in our body?s needs throughout the year. Winter time and cooler weather beckon us to nurture the body and fill up with warmth when the frigid, dry air blows in. ?

In Ayurvedic terms, Rajasic and Tamasic foods dull the mind (Rajasic foods are excessively spicy, salty and fried foods; Tamasic foods are stale, recooked, artificial, rancid or greasy and include white flour & white sugars). All of the spices in this tea are Sattvic and counter the negative affects of Rajasic and Tamasic foods, but it is not meant as a substitute for poor diet.

In addition to warming our body and spirit, this recipe is caffeine free and loaded with antioxidants. I?m fortunate to have a sister-in-law from India who?s mom has shared many authentic Indian recipes. This is my own recipe for Turmeric Tea, ?a version of traditional ?Golden Milk?. ?These instructions are for making a Turmeric Tea Paste with a variety of spices that have some wonderful cleansing benefits ? my favorite way to detoxify the body, gently and subtly ~ as easy as drinking a good cup of tea.?

When you are shopping for your spices, try to get organic since many traditionally grown spices may have heavy metals in them. Your local health food store probably has a bulk section where you can buy just what you need to make this recipe. If you really want to be PURE, buy the organic spices whole and grind them yourself with a mortar and pestle or spice mill.

Turmeric has been used in Indian cultures, especially Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Modern science is validating through research it?s super-antioxidant properties that it protects the liver in particular. Scientists have also found turmeric aids in circulation, decreases inflammation and improves platelet and cholesterol levels. Because of it?s anti-inflammatory effects, turmeric has shown promise in treatment of conditions like arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Many studies have found it to be aggressive against many forms of cancer. Only cons? It stimulates bile production so anyone with gallstones or bile obstructions should avoid using it, as well as pregnant women since it can stimulate uterine contractions. A little goes a long way too, so don?t drink this tea all day long. Too much?turmeric? can cause stomach upset. Just like everything else, moderation is best!

Cardamom is anti-spasmodic so it will soothe your digestive tract. It?s also anti-parasitic and an expectorant, helpful for sinus or lung infections.

Cinnamon is another powerhouse nutrient, packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals that keep your body healthy. Cinnamon is excellent for digestive issues and enhances circulation. It improves the breakdown of foods, especially the metabolism of fats. It?s anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and protects the stomach from viruses and parasites.

Coriander soothes the digestive tract as it strengthens the pancreas to lower glucose and balance insulin levels. It is anti-inflammatory and calming to the intestines.

Ginger has traditionally been used to calm stomach upset but is also anti-inflammatory, an expectorant and anti-coagulant. It can soothe stomach cramping and improve?peristalsis.

Clove is antiseptic and anti-parasitic, a powerful anti-microbial against many pathogens including listeria, salmonella and e. Coli. Clove is anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic and anesthetic to soothe digestive upset and pain from ulcers.

This tea is loaded with antioxidants! Here?s a quick video on preparing it:

Here?s the Recipe:?

6 T Turmeric

1 T Cardamom

1/4 tsp powdered Ginger

1/2 tsp Coriander

1 T Cinnamon

1/8 tsp Clove

1 C Pure Water

Combine all the ingredients in a stainless steel saucepan. Turn on low heat and stir until the mixture creates a thick paste. Cool, and spoon into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator. To make your tea, add 1/2-1 tsp of Turmeric Tea Paste to warmed coconut, almond or raw milk. Sweeten with raw honey of you?d like. Enjoy! Makes 48 servings.

I packaged up three small spice jars of this paste to give as gifts and share with friends. This is a fun way to re-use those old spice or individual jelly jars.Give a gift of health

Part of the convenience of this tea is to have it in paste form so it mixes quickly and easily with your milk. You may substitute 1 drop of clove or coriander essential oil for the powdered spices, but the recipe will become too runny if you replace the larger quantity spices with oils.

Arhoolie Records set highlights 50 years of roots-music

BOSTON (Reuters) - Chris Strachwitz discovered the first performer for his Arhoolie Records label by quizzing roadside field hands, a prosperous cotton farmer named Mr. Tom Moore, and a man called Peg Leg at a railroad station in Navasota, Texas.

As Strachwitz tells it, Peg Leg identified a highway worker and former tenant farmer who entertained local folks: Mance Lipscomb.

"Mance Lipscomb, Texas Sharecropper and Songster," was recorded in 1960 in the musician's shotgun house, and it launched Lipscomb into the surging U.S. folk-music revival.

It also launched German-born Strachwitz on a half-century career of uncovering and popularizing vernacular "roots music" of the Americas. That includes the blues of black Americans, the Zydeco of Louisiana's Creoles, Mexican norte?o and Tejano conjunto music, and other styles that spring from deep cultural wells and get crowds dancing in obscure rooms.

"I probably should have become a detective," Strachwitz told Reuters in a telephone interview. "Meeting all these people was an intriguing adventure. I didn't have to go on a safari, hunting for elephants or something. I hunted musicians."

Some of the performers who Strachwitz tracked down on his back-road and honky-tonk rambles, and others influenced by him and his records, gathered two years ago in Berkeley, California for a 50th anniversary concert run.

The three-night run was released this week as "They All Played for Us," a 4-CD set and photo book that showcases Arhoolie's mosaic of musicians.

"They had confidence in the music that they made," Grammy-winning recording artist Taj Mahal said. "It wasn't predicated on selling a million or millions ... it's what made them happy. Chris - most of his records were about that."

Mahal and fellow roots-music pioneer Ry Cooder joined the performers at Berkeley's Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse for the anniversary. Others included the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band, bluegrass master Peter Rowan, norte?o stars Los Cenzontles, the Treme Brass Band from New Orleans and The Campbell Brothers, a "sacred-steel" guitar gospel group.

GATHERING A MUSICAL FAMILY

Strachwitz, who said he fell in love with records as a child in pre-war Germany and came of age in southern California, gathered his musical family in several ways. He scoured record stores and listened to regional ethnic radio programs.

Strachwitz learned of bluesman "Black Ace" Turner when he inquired at a street-corner gambling game. Blues legend "Lightning" Hopkins took him to see a cousin, Clifton Chenier, who later rose to acclaim as the "King of Zydeco."

Strachwitz named Arhoolie after a type of work song, a field holler, that had deep roots in African-American musical culture.

He was asked to describe the unique attributes of each musical style he recorded. But instead he cited a common thread.

"I think it's the powerful rhythm," he said. "They were all dance music - real dance music, not this boogaloo shit. And it's sort of honky-tonk music, it's just free flowing, rhythmic, stuff. With some good singing on top of it."

He recorded in his living room, kitchens, beer joints and churches. "I didn't give a damn about acoustics. I'd record in an outhouse if I had to," he said.

He made sure his musicians got their due. Strachwitz recalled giving an appreciative Fred McDowell a royalty check for the Rolling Stones' cover version of "You Gotta Move."

"Fred McDowell enjoyed his life so much just playing for people, and after we got him the money ... from the Rolling Stones, he said. ?Well, I'm glad them boys enjoyed my music.'"

The 50th anniversary concert and recording were fundraisers for the Arhoolie Foundation, which supports folk culture and is advised by Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and others. Projects include films, instrument donations, and digital transfers of more than 50,000 records and cassettes in the collection Strachwitz donated of Mexican and Mexican-American music.

A "SONGCATCHER" STRUGGLING TO STAY IN BUSINESS

Arhoolie Records and writer Adam Machado won a Grammy award last year for "Hear Me Howling," an anthology of the Bay Area music scene culled from Strachwitz's recordings.

But Arhoolie, based in El Cerrito, California, is struggling. Strachwitz said. He called himself more of "songcatcher" than businessman.

"I've been trying to survive basically on the publishing royalties. I haven't got a salary from Arhoolie in years and now they can't even afford to pay the rent anymore," he said.

But there will always be songs to catch and backwaters to explore, Mahal said. The folk-music scene is still vibrant and house concerts are supporting a wave of new talent to be discovered, he said.

And the legacy Strachwitz created will endure.

"Deep Americana (music) is a huge force and it has traveled out of our country to people around the world. It is a big source of comfort for a lot of people," Mahal said.

"People like Chris Strachwitz have spent their lives making sure that that is so, and that these people don't get lost in the shuffle, and drop through the cracks."
